"Extra-light" sets (for example 009-042) make bends easier and suit fast playing. The standard 010-046 is the most versatile. Heavier gauges (011 and above) give a fuller sound and suit low tunings. After a significant change of gauge, your guitar may need a setup. See our guide "How to choose your string gauge" (in French).
80/20 bronze strings have a bright, crisp sound but age faster. Phosphor bronze gives a warmer, rounder tone and resists corrosion better. Choose according to the sound you want and the way you play.
Tension describes how firm the strings are. Normal tension is softer and more comfortable. High tension gives more volume and projection but requires more finger strength. The tension is stated by the manufacturer on each set.
Scale length is the vibrating length of the string, from the nut to the bridge. Sets exist in several lengths (short, medium, long, extra-long). Most basses are long scale (34 inches), but check your instrument's length before buying. See our guide "How to choose your bass strings (gauge and scale)" (in French).
A thin pick (under 0.60 mm) suits strumming and chords. A medium pick (0.60 to 0.80 mm) is versatile. A thick pick (over 0.80 mm) offers more precision and control for lead playing. See our guide "Thickness, shape, material: how to choose your pick" (in French).
