When should you change your strings?

I can already hear a few of you saying: “Well, when they break!” Not only then — a string also wears mechanically from vibrating over time.

Its mechanical elasticity decreases, and all the harmonics that make your guitar sound beautiful slowly fade away. Strings oxidize, become uneven, and therefore sound worse — even out of tune.

Finally they get dirty, and their vibrations become less wide and less even.

In short, you can change your strings when you feel your guitar’s tone is dying out. Even if you do not play often, a string will still oxidize slowly once you have touched it.

Three extra points to keep in mind when it is time to change strings:

1. My guitar is hard to tune. The tuner struggles to lock onto the note
2. I can no longer pull off techniques I normally master with ease
3. I have not changed my strings in a year!
